Yesterday it was my pleasure to guide a group of ACVI researchers around Saltspring Island where I live. We got to some important sites for the Asian-Canadian history of the island and learned about some of the cultures that have been prominent in its history.

A century ago, Japanese Canadians built kilns on many of the southern Gulf Islands to produce charcoal that was used in the canneries and for the manufacture of dynamite. On Galiano and Saltspring the ruins of a number of these kilns have been found and restored.
On July 28 a public gathering was held at the Cowichan Valley Museum and Archives in Duncan to mark the inauguration of the 'Asian Canadians on Vancouver Island' project, a partnership between UVIC and local museums on Vancouver Island.
