The Japanese on Newcastle Island; Years of salt and herring

Times Colonist Article Sunday March 23, 2003

By Darrell Ohs

I was given this article by friend and historian (and BC Archives wiz) Christopher Hanna recently during a visit. The author of this interesting article details a century of activity (including coal mining, a sandstone quarry, one of BC’s largest herring saltery operations, and shipyard) on the compact 336 hectares of Newcastle Island that is now a provincial park.
