Charcoal Kilns in the Gulf Islands

A century ago, Japanese Canadians built kilns on many of the southern Gulf Islands to produce charcoal that was used in the canneries and for the manufacture of dynamite. On Galiano and Saltspring the ruins of a number of these kilns have been found and restored.
